Answers to the questions families ask most about Roots Volleyball Academy, our Houses, the season, and joining.

Getting Started

How does my athlete join ROOTS?
Set up a practice visit, come to a positional session, or come to an open gym. email: contact@rootsvba.com
Do you hold tryouts?
Yes, annual tryouts are the end of July for the upcoming club season. We also host a pre-evaluation tryout in May.
What age groups do you have houses for?
Eight houses spanning 6th grade through 12th grade. Each house caps at 10–12 athletes. Players can also sign up as a practice player. 10 travel players 2 practice players
What if my athlete has no club experience?
That's fine. We have intro youth clinics, positional and intro teams for players with no club experience.

The House System

What's a 'house'?
Each age bracket is its own house, determined by grade level for the upcoming year.
Will my athletes be with the same teammates every year?
That's the goal. Roster turnover happens naturally as families move or interests change, but the core of each house stays together.

Cost + Payment

How much does the club season cost?
Season fees vary by house and are set each spring. Its ranges from $1500 to $4500. The current season's fees are visible during enrollment. Check out the teams page to see all that is included in the club fees.
Can we pay in installments?
Yes. After you enroll, the Payment Plan section of your portal lets you pick from a variety of installment schedules.
Do you offer scholarships?
Yes! Need-based scholarships are reviewed quarterly. We don't broadcast specifics because every family's situation is different.

Schedule + Logistics

When and where do you practice?
Each team has a different schedule! All our teams practice at the Hyvee Arena.
How many tournaments per season?
Eight to ten tournament weekends from October through February, almost all within driving distance of Kansas City. We try to keep travel reasonable; All teams, except 12 Sprout, travel to all the tournaments together. Each season will have 3-4 local tournaments and 3-4 travel tournaments.
What happens if my athlete gets injured?
We work with each family on a return-to-play timeline and modify drills so a recovering athletes can stay engaged with the house without overextending. Insurance + medical decisions stay between your family and your doctor.

Recruiting + College

Do you help with college recruiting?
Yes. Once a athlete hits 15U we start supporting their academic + athletic profile through the My Career section of the portal. The app tracks Vertical, Attack Vertical, Approach Touch, Block Touch, etc.. All teams have access to film and a templated outreach to schools matching the athlete's level and interest.
Where do ROOTS athletes play in college?
2025-2026 was our first season, and our seniors have chosen schools representing programs across NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs. The right level depends on the athlete, not the club.
